Power Outage

Who knew that without power, communication is just not there. With the passing of hurricane Ike it has left thousands without power. For those that live in the south they are experiencing more severe damage then those up north. Hurricane Ike has caused major wind storms that knocked out power sources, major transformers, and utility lines all in its destructive path.

Cell phones going, TV playing in living room, video games playing on two TVs upstairs, washer and dryer going, someone on the house telephone, another on Myspace and lights blazing in every room being occupied. This house is literally lit up like a Christmas tree.

Total darkness has just taken not only this house, but the whole street and surrounding neighbors. "What happened, what do we do, I'm scared", this is all you hear in the mist of total darkness, there is no power to anything. Flashlights and candles are pulled out to help see where you are going, but there is no communication with the outside world.

The only thing possible to use is a cell phone, if it had been charged, otherwise there was no other communication. No computer, TV, house phone, not even a radio unless there were batteries in it, no way to find out who else this could have happened to. This can be a serious matter especially for those that are never prepared for such cases. Unless you were a little more prepared and went out and had a generator you were just out of power.

In this case of emergency most if not all forms of communication were lost and if the cell phone was not recharged soon that was gone. There was no voicemail, email or leaving a message you had to physically go and have personal communication to find out anything. When you communicate with many people and then all of a sudden it is shut off, your world can become a state of confusion, panic can even set in. For the fear of not being plugged in and not knowing what's going on in the "real world".
